Toyota Partners with Asian Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund to Support STEM Students

A strong will to succeed is what drives students, and it’s also what Toyota and the Asian Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund look for in students. By working together, Toyota and the APIASF were able to award scholarships to 17-year-old David Thang and 21 other Asian Pacific Islander American students as they pursue an education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). In addition, several $5,000 scholarships were also given out to 11 APIA students in Southern California and 11 in North Texas.

At only 17 years old, Thang has come face-to-face with many obstacles that could have discouraged his lifelong dream of becoming a doctor. Escaping from a country ruled by the Burmese Military was not the only difficult test Thang would have to pass. His father became ill and Thang had to work to cover the medical bills, only to watch cancer take his father’s life.

With the firm determination to succeed, Thang kept on. “After my father died, my desire to become a doctor grew even stronger because I want to prevent such a loss,” he explained.

Scholarships are not the only thing offered through this partnership. For the third consecutive year, Toyota is providing opportunities for real world experience by offering a paid internship to one of its Toyota APIASF scholarship recipients.

Karen Ideno, vice president of product, marketing corporate social responsibility, and communications at the Toyota Financial Services said, “This unique internship will empower a student with hands-on experience in the workplace. It will provide the scholar with the interpersonal skills necessary to succeed on the job, and gain valuable insights into his or her long-term career goals.”

With over 10,000 student applications in the course of six years, the scholarship program has intended majors for the awarded students. These majors range from biochemistry to computer engineering.
