Toyota has long had a legacy of building some of the safest vehicles on the road, which is proven through the automaker’s lengthening list of awards and recognitions. Taking home more Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awards than any other automaker this year, Toyota once again reaffirms its commitment to protecting you and your passengers wherever the road takes you.

Whether you drive a new or used Toyota, one thing is for certain: your vehicle was designed to maximize your safety at every turn. Each year, Toyota spends millions of dollars on research and development in order to discover new ways to make their cars even safer. Through implementing the Star Safety System on all cars, trucks and SUVs and expanding the Safety Sense driver-assist technologies to more models, Toyota was able to once again lead the industry with the most IIHS awards.

“At Toyota, our focus remains on the safety and peace of mind of our customers,” said Dino Triantafyllos, Toyota’s North American Chief Quality Officer. “We are proud that our commitment to developing safe and reliable vehicles resulted in such a strong showing in 2017 TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards.”

The IIHS has recently strengthened its criteria for the Top Safety awards, making it even tougher for vehicles to qualify. In order to receive a Top Safety Pick title, a vehicle must get “Good” ratings in the five crashworthiness tests: small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints and seats. It must also have an available front crash prevention system and high quality headlights. To get the Top Safety Pick Plus honor, the front crash prevention system must achieve an “Advanced” or “Superior” rating.

Five 2017 Toyota models received the highest Top Safety Pick Plus award: Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Prius v and Prius (models built after Aug. 2016 only). Additionally, the Yaris iA and Avalon each received a Top Safety Pick award. To have this many models score high in the tests is a huge accomplishment, and shows that Toyota continues to lead in safety innovation.
