Image: Cirba Solutions Helps Toyota Expand Battery Recycling Network

Toyota is committed to protecting the health of the environment, and this extends far beyond the focus on electrifying the lineup. Automotive batteries are known to have damaging effects on the environment when they are not disposed of properly. Unfortunately, many batteries wind up in landfills and ultimately contribute to the growing pollution problem. In addition, many of the materials in these end-of-life batteries could actually be extracted and re-used. Toyota has recently partnered with Cirba Solutions to expand its battery recycling network. Cirba Solutions has more than 60 years of battery recycling experience, and its services span from collecting old batteries to the transportation and extraction of critical elements.

This partnership between Toyota Motor North America and Cirba Solutions expands the automaker’s recycling network for BEVs, PHEVs and HEVs. Cirba Solutions boasts a 95% recovery rate for critical element extraction. The partnership lowers costs for Toyota while moving it closer to its closed-loop goal for battery recycling. Cirba Solutions recently benefited from a large grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, which was used to improve the company’s facility in Lancaster, Ohio. At this facility, Cirba Solutions will remove battery-grade materials from end-of-life batteries and return them to the supply chain for future use in EVs.
