Toyota recognizes that solar power will play a crucial role in our collective future. As a cleaner alternative to the fossil fuels that have powered the last century, solar energy is vital for protecting the environment. To honor this innovative and sustainable power source, Toyota has unveiled the Vivid Solar Sculptural Display, which is now open to visitors at its Research & Development facility in Michigan.

Vivid Solar Sculptural Display Helps Harvest Energy

Developed through a collaboration between Toyota's Advanced Product Planning Office (APPO) and the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA), this stunning display seamlessly blends solar technology with striking color schemes. Far from being just visually appealing, the installation actively captures energy. Cultivating diverse renewable energy sources is essential to maintaining our modern way of life as fossil fuel reserves dwindle.

Built at a 1/6th scale, this carbon-neutral, self-sustaining model consists of 11 triangular columns. By utilizing lenticular lenses, the creators managed to "conceal the solar panels while preserving their energy harvesting potential." Simply put, the sculpture serves as both a beautiful piece of art and a functional environmental breakthrough that actively generates power.

The origins of this remarkable concept date back quite a bit. While the official request for the project came in 2020, its foundational technology was developed over a decade ago. Co-project leader Songtao Wu, a senior principal scientist in the Materials Research Department, explained that TMC began experimenting with nanotechnology-driven dynamic color pigments 12 years prior, aiming to eventually adapt them for solar applications.

Although funded by TMC, APPO championed the initiative for the North American market, managing finances and advocating for its commercial adaptation. Today, this Vivid colored-panel technology can be integrated into standard solar arrays while maintaining over 90% of the panels' original energy-efficiency potential.

Co-project leader Brian Woods is equally thrilled to see the Vivid Solar technology become a reality. "When you consider both display and advertising possibilities, there is great ROI potential for this technology," he notes, adding that this innovative tech successfully "combines an environmentally conscious power source with limitless branding potential."
